THEME DAY I Assessing Core Competencies in Clinical Communication Julie Schirmer, LCSW, Steven Barnett, MD, M. Kim Marvel, PhD, Deborah Seymour, PsyD, Larry Mauksch, MEd What are the best practices for assessing competency in medical communication? In July 2002, residency review committees will expect residency programs to document assessment efforts of general competencies as outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This theme day will provide state-of-the-art techniques for competency assessment, the dimensions to consider when choosing strategies to assess clinical communication, and an overview of clinical communication competencies for family physician trainees.
